As with Lionel electric motor models each steam engine model of Lionel bore resemblance to a variety of steam locomotives, most notably of the New York Central (NYC) and Pennsylvania Rail Road (PRR) Lines. Starting in 1937 the models were more detailed since die-cast moulding was introduced instead of tinplate. In the following we will try to show the Lionel steam engine models and their closest real-world steam engine side by side:
